Mozy and Carbonite are companies that offer you excellent protection from loss or accidental deletion of critically important data, files, pictures, etc.

Because these services default to automatic backup, by choosing to backup your data this way, you are eliminating a major area from your life.

Both are old-timers in the online backup industry – Mozy has been around since 2005 and Carbonite, since 2006.

How Mozy and Carbonite are alike:

In many respects, Mozy and Carbonite provide the same product:

* Both provided unlimited online backup for a fair price

* Both services guard your data fiercely guard your data and SSL encrypt everything before it leaves your computer

* Both offer services for both MAC and PC products

* Both require a small program resident on your computer to manage the upload and automatic backup updates (the programs just sit at the bottom of your screen letting you know that your system is being continually backed up)

* Both offer continuous and automatic backup

* If you ever need it, recovery on both services is simple and straightforward

How Mozy and Carbonite are different:

* MozyPro’s customer and technical support is available 24/7 – Carbonite’s phone support is during business hours, M-F, 9-5 eastern time

* If you want “priority” support from Carbonite you have to pay extra and even then it is still only available during business hours. This can be a real frustration – when you have a customer service issue in an are as critical as your data trusted to a faraway service, you generally want it dealt with immediately.

* Mozy has a monthly pay option, Carbonite does not

In summary, both Mozy and Carbonite are excellent and reliable services. Since you can’t choose when you have customer service or technical issues, the lack of 24/7 phone support by Carbonite is a real negative, however.

Because of the stronger customer service presence that Mozy has, we give them the edge.

I use both services and believe they are both very good and would recommend both. As for the review, it doesn’t seem appropriate though to compare MozyPro to carbonite. In order to get the MPro’s 24/7 phone support you must pay $3.95 +$.50/GB. For 50GB that would be nearly $30/month vs. Carbonite’s $5/month.

    Hi Scott!

Thanks for the comment…the “Pro” versions of both are approximately the same price and the “home” versions are about the same price.

At the end of the day though, you are dead-on right – They are the same thing, packaged a little differently.

Ultimately, it is the customer service experience that separates these companies.

Carbonite is doing a great job of marketing and is growing faster now but the customer service experiences I have had have been rushed. I have appealed to their higher ups and haven’t gotten through – I suspect it is just growing pains, but still – not good.

Mozy on the other hand has been willing to spend a lot of time with the issues I have had and I have been able to connect with them at a higher level more easily.
