There are several companies that offer online backup services today. A simple Internet search will reveal there are thousands of providers that want your business. However, not all of these companies are equal. Here are some pointers for comparing online backup services, so you can choose the right one for you needs.

Where Is Your Data Stored?

One of the first questions you’ll want to ask is where your data will be stored. Most companies will store your data at a remote server. If you are worried that your data may be hijacked during the transfer, you can rest assured that these companies use secure servers for the transfer, as well.

How Much Data Can You Store?

For most home PC owners, a free online backup service would probably suffice in terms of space. The exception might be someone who has thousands of pictures or music files on their computer. Most business owners should find online backup services that offer unlimited space for your data. You do not have to worry about purchasing more space or having your data storage denied because you’re over the limit.

Pricing Different Services

While there are many companies that offer free services, you may find that paying for data storage better meets your needs. Besides having unlimited space, most of these companies make it easier for you to retrieve your data. You simply sign in and download what you need. You can put it on a new computer or even download databases and other important files to your network computers.

In Closing

If you are not familiar with online backup services, it is best to read through some of the reviews about the different providers. It’s a great way to see what real people think, what they are dissatisfied about, and if they will continue to use a particular data storage company. This feedback can help you determine which company is best for your needs and will fit your budget. In some cases, you can even find offers for the first three months free or “buy a year – get a year.” Whatever the cost, it’s probably much less expensive than paying someone to try to retrieve your data off of a crashed computer.

What sets apart business-class services are 1) transfer speed 2) support 3) reliability of restores. If you value your data, don’t jeapardize it on a free backup service just to save a couple $. That’s why I protect my business data with Remote Data Backups.
